
Blue Rocks fall Sunday in Winston-Salem

Winston-Salem, NC--- The Winston-Salem Warthogs came away with a 4-2 win over the Wilmington Blue Rock in the series finale at Ernie Shore Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Blue Rocks got on the scoreboard first on Sunday against winning pitcher Ryan Rodriguez (7-4), who became the league's fifth seven-game winner of 2005. After both clubs failed to score over the first three innings, the Rocks got a two-out double by Chad Spann and a two-out RBI single by Brant Ust to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth.
The lead was short lived as Winston-Salem dented the scoreboard for three in the bottom of the inning.
Leo Daigle drilled a three-run home run in the fourth inning against losing pitcher Andrew Dobies (1-1) to put the Warthogs up for good. It was Daigle's fourth home run of the series and his league-leading 20th of the season.
After the Blue Rocks scored a run in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Bryan Pritz, the Warthogs tacked on a run in the bottom of the frame to take a 4-2 lead.
Rodriguez went seven innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits. He walked no one and struck out three.
Dobies also went seven innings and allowed four earned runs on six hits in suffering his first loss of the season with the Blue Rocks. He finished by retiring the final eight batters that he faced.
Rafael Flores worked two scoreless innings out of the bullpen and registered his first save of the season for the Warthogs, who have won four of the first six meetings of the season with the Blue Rocks.
Scott White went 0-for-4 in the game for the Blue Rocks, ending his 10-game hitting streak. The top four hitters in the Wilmington lineup combined to go 0-for-15 on Sunday.
Chad Spann continued his hot hitting by collecting two doubles in four at-bats. Spann has hit in eight in a row and has 13 hits over his last 26 at-bats. He has eight extra-base hits over his last six games.
The Rocks continue their seven-game road trip with the first of four against the Potomac Nationals on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. Jose Vaquedano (3-1, 2.81) makes the start in the opener for the Blue Rocks.
Game Notes:
The Rocks had six hits in the game on Sunday and five of the six hits came with two outs in an inning. Rodriguez and Flores combined to retire 15 of the final 16 hitters from the fifth inning on.
The Rocks have had 17 of their last 23 games decided by two runs or less.
