Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
The Wilmington Blue Rocks picked up a key 6-5 comeback victory against the Jersey Shore BlueClaws in their matinee matchup on Wednesday, July 27, to tie up the series at one-game a piece.
Lucas Knowles started on the mound for Wilmington and got the Blue Rocks out of the top of the first inning quickly, striking out the side.
This allowed their offense to get up the plate and jump out to a 1-0 lead. After the BlueClaws' starter Rafael Marcano walked Yasel Antuna and Jose Sanchez back-to-back, Drew Millas hit an RBI double to center field to drive in Antuna.
Jersey Shore tied up the game in the third inning when Feylin Minyety was able to bring in Baron Radcliff on a ground ball to shortstop. They then took the 2-1 lead in the fourth when Carlos De La Cruz hit his second home run of the series, this time off Knowles.
The BlueClaws really went to work in the fifth inning as they strung together a series of singles to drive in two more runs and expand their lead to 4-1. After the fourth run scored, Knowles was taken out after 4.1 innings of work with the stat line of four runs, five hits, one walk, and six strikeouts.
Garvin Alston came in replacement of Knowles and after closing out the fifth inning, allowed Jersey Shore to score another run in the sixth when Radcliff hit an RBI double.
Going into the bottom of the sixth down by five runs, it looked bleak for the Blue Rocks, but Wilmington still had some fight in them.
Prior to the start of the frame, the BlueClaws brought in Cam Bedrosian for Marcano and the Blue Rocks took advantage. After Sanchez opened up the inning with a single and Millas reached on balls, Kevin Strohschein drove both men in with an RBI double.
With the game sitting at 5-3 and two runners on, Onix Vega stepped up to the plate and hit a three-run homer to take the lead 6-5.
This would be all the Blue Rocks needed to capture the win, as Richard Guasch would come in to close out the game for Wilmington, picking up the save.
The battle of the blue teams continues tomorrow with the Blue Rocks and BlueClaws set to face off in a double header on Thursday, July 28. First pitch for the first game is set for 5:05 p.m.
