Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - The Charlotte Stone Crabs got the tying run on base in both the eighth and ninth innings Tuesday, but were unable to scratch across a run in a 2-0 loss to the Dunedin Blue Jays at Charlotte Sports Park.
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the eighth, Charlotte (3-10) catcher Ronaldo Hernandez singled with two outs to center before Tyler Frank walked. After Zac Law was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Zach Rutherford bounced into a fielder's choice to end the threat.
The Stone Crabs got the first two men on base in the ninth when Garrett Whitley walked and Russ Olive singled, but the next three batters all struck out.
Both runs in the game came in the top of the second. In a scoreless game, Dunedin (9-4) right fielder Ryan Noda drew a walk before Riley Adams rolled a base hit into left. The next batter was Christian Williams, who lined a single to right center to score Noda and give Dunedin a 1-0 lead. Demi Orimoloye followed with a fielder's choice to score Adams and extend the Blue Jays advantage to 2-0.
The Stone Crabs did get six scoreless innings of relief to keep them close. Brian Shaffer went 3.2 frames, allowing only one hit while striking out two. Jack Labosky fanned a pair over 2.1 scoreless innings.
Tuesday's defeat extended Charlotte's losing streak to seven games, their longest skid since they started the season 0-7 in 2017. The Stone Crabs have been out-scored 32-11 over that span, scoring no more than three runs in any game.
Right-hander Tobias Myers (0-1, 6.48) will look to snap the slide at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, against Justin Dillon (2-0, 3.09) of the Blue Jays. Coverage begins at 12:45 p.m. on the Stone Crabs Baseball Network.
