Blue Jays Quiet Miracle Bats, Take Finale 4-1

FORT MYERS, Fla. (July 18, 2012) - The Dunedin Blue Jays stifled the Fort Myers' lineup and defeated the Miracle 4-1 in the finale of a four-game series at Hammond Stadium on Wednesday.

With the victory, the Blue Jays salvaged a series split and the two teams split the season series 4-4. The Miracle went 20 2/3 consecutive innings over the final three games without scoring a run until Josmil Pinto's sac fly scored Angel Morales in the eighth inning.

Soft-tossing lefty Egan Smith kept the Miracle off balance at the plate most of the afternoon. Smith gave up just three singles and no runs over six innings. He struck out six despite never throwing a pitch faster than 83 miles per hour on the stadium radar gun.

Pat Dean had another good start for the Miracle that didn't result in a victory. Dean also pitched six innings and allowed two runs on six hits. He retired the first seven hitters, but the eighth man, Marcus Knecht, belted a one-out solo homer in the third to put the Blue Jays up 1-0.

Dunedin struck again in the fourth when Ryan Schimpf doubled to left to move Jonathan Jones to third. Kevin Ahrens followed with an RBI single to make it 2-0. Dean was able to pitch out of the jam but the Miracle couldn't give him any run support.

The Blue Jays took command of the game in the eighth against reliever Ricky Bowen. After Schimpf led off with an infield single, Bowen walked two batters to load the bases. With the infield drawn in, Jack Murphy hit a pop fly to shallow left that Daniel Santana could not catch up to. Schimpf scored and Santana made a wild throw to third base that escaped from Bowen and allowed Ahrens to come home and make it 4-0.

Fort Myers loaded the bases against Dayton Marze with no outs in the eighth, but Rene Tosoni lined out to second, Pinto flew out to right to score a run and Daniel Ortiz struck out looking to end the frame.

The Miracle travel to Lakeland on Thursday to begin a four-game set with the Flying Tigers. The games starts at 6:30 p.m. with the State Farm pregame show on www.miraclebaseball.com coming on the air at 6:10 p.m.
