Stone Crabs Top Daytona 3-1

DAYTONA BEACH -- The Charlotte Stone Crabs jumped out to an early and never looked back in a 3-1 victory over the Daytona Cubs on Wednesday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

Steve Tinoco belted his first home run of the season to put Charlotte ahead 2-0 in the first inning. That bast followed a lead-off single by Robby Price and provided a two-run cushion for starter Eliazer Suero.

Those two runs proved to be all Suero (3-6) would need as he surrendered a single run on two hits over 5-2/3 innings to pick up the victory. Suero turned in his best start of the season, with the lone blemish coming on a third inning, solo-homer by Cubs designated hitter Taylor Davis.

Center fielder Kevin Kiermaier had quite a day offensively, collecting three hits and making an outstanding leaping catch at the wall in left center field to rob Rebel Ridling of an extra-base hit in the bottom of the seventh.

The Charlotte bullpen provided quality innings to keep Daytona's bats quiet. Jimmy Patterson worked 2-1/3 scoreless frames before Chris Rearick came on to finish things off.

Rearick recorded his second save of the series and 19th of the season. Mikie Mathook's made a diving catch in right for the final out, helping Charlotte split the four-game series against Daytona.

Charlotte returns home to open a four-game series against the Clearwater Threshers on Thursday. Left-hander Enny Romero will take the mound in the opener against Threshers righty Brody Colvin. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
