Blue Jays Finish Off Sweep of D-Braves

July 1, 2013 - Appalachian League (ApL)
Danville Otterbots News Release

DANVILLE, Va. - On a night where the D-Braves pitching was excellent, the offense could not seem to record the clutch hit as Bluefield won the game 3-0 finishing off a three game sweep of Danville. The Blue Jays used a two run fifth to take the lead and added an insurance run in the eighth to win their eighth contest of the year, and their sixth in a row.

Andry Ubiera pitched great for Danville Monday night, throwing 4.2 innings of two run baseball. His command was shaky walking four batters but managed to pitch out of trouble to keep the damage at a minimum.

The bullpen for Danville was excellent as Richie Tate and Ryan Gunther combined for 2.1 scoreless innings while Chuck Buchanan gave up one lone run in two innings of work.

The pitching staff for Bluefield was once again able to work through the Danville lineup, allowing just five hits as a staff while striking out 10. Starter Zak Wasilewski pitched five innings with three strikeouts, earning his second win of the season.

Danville's best opportunity to put runs on the scoreboard came in the sixth as they loaded the bases with just one out. Reliever Alberto Tirado was able to strike out Jackson Laumann and Justin Black to end the D-Braves threat and escape the bases loaded jam.

Bluefield's big inning came in the fifth as DJ Davis hit his third triple of the series, and fifth of the season, with one out. Shortstop Dawel Lugo doubled in Davis and advanced to third after a balk by Ubiera. The Appalachian League Hitter of the Week Derrick Loveless was able to lift a fly ball to deep left scoring Lugo on a sacrifice fly.

Bryan De La Rosa had a great game offensively going 3-for-3 with a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt with two strikes on him.

The D-Braves are off Tuesday but will return to action Wednesday as they welcome the Burlington Royals to ALP 325 Field. Michael Flores will make his second home start while Burlington will counter with Matt Tenuta. The game is set for a 7:00 p.m. first pitch and following the game the will be special post-game 3rd of July Fireworks at the stadium, free for all attendees to the game.
