DUNEDIN - The Clearwater Threshers suffered their fourth consecutive shutout, falling 3-0 at the hands of the Dunedin Blue Jays on Friday night at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium.
Clearwater (66-66, 31-34) received a strong outing from righty Nic Hanson, but Dunedin (62-67, 25-38) utilized five different hurlers to hold the Threshers offense to just one hit.
The Threshers have now been shutout in four consecutive games, a span of 34 innings dating back to Tuesday's 3-2 walk-off win over Tampa.
Dunedin plated the game's first run on Friday in the first.
Jon Berti lined a double to the left field corner leading off, and advanced to third on a Derrick Chung groundout. Matt Newman followed by belting a double of his own off the top of the wall in right, scoring Berti to make it 1-0 Blue Jays.
Hanson settled in and retired the next 14 men he faced, before the Blue Jays tacked on two in the bottom of the sixth.
Emilio Guerrero worked an eight pitch at-bat before doubling to left to lead off, and with one out Chung laced a double of his own to left to score Guerrero. Newman lined to short for the second out, but Michael Crouse split the left-center field gap for an RBI triple to push the Dunedin lead to 3-0.
Daniel Norris (1-0) held Clearwater in check through five scoreless innings in his Dunedin debut. The 20-year did not allow a hit until Bob Stumpo blooped a single to center with one out in the fifth, and finished having permitted just the single along with two walks in the start.
Hanson (0-2) turned in his best outing since debuting with the Threshers on August 7. The 21-year old worked seven strong innings, allowing three runs on six hits. He did not issue a walk while striking out four.
The Threshers will host Dunedin for the final home game of the 2013 season on Saturday, featuring the largest fireworks show in Bright House Field history following the game. The Phillie Phanatic will be on hand as well for Fan Appreciation Night. First pitch will be 6:30 p.m., with Luis Paulino (6-6) on the hill for Clearwater.
