Manatees Blasted by Cubs, 11-6
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Nick Ramirez tied the Brevard County Manatees' single-season home run record on Friday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark, but it was the Daytona Cubs' five long balls that resulted in an 11-6 loss for the 'Tees.
Ramirez pounded a two-run shot in the fifth inning for his 19th home run of the year, tying the Manatees' (28-37 second half, 65-67 overall), record set by Hunter Morris in 2011. That homer made it a 6-4 ballgame, with a two-run double from Ramriez tying the game in the seventh.
Daytona (39-19, 74-50) broke the tie in the bottom of the eighth in a big way as the Cubs belted three homers off of Santo Mazanillo in the frame. Manzanillo did not record an out and was charged with five runs in all.
Solo shots from Kris Bryant in the third inning and Dustin Geiger in the bottom of the fifth helped build up Daytona's lead that was eventually erased by Ramirez, but it was big flies from Bijan Rademacher, Pin-Chieh Chen and Zeke DeVoss in the eighth that put Daytona over the top.
D'Vontrey Richardson provided another offensive spark for the 'Tees, as he led the game off with a triple and fell a homer shy of the cycle. He scored in the first inning on a Yadiel Rivera groundout to put Brevard on the board first.
The lead didn't last long for the Manatees though, as Daytona answered back with four runs in the bottom of the frame off of Brent Suter (7-10, 3.63 ERA).
After a leadoff double from Zeke DeVoss, Suter issued before he got the first out. Another walk forced in a run, before Rademacher singled and a fielding error by Ben McMahan allowed another run to come across.
Suter would settle down and finished with five strikeouts in five innings, with all three of his walks and two of the five hits that he allowed coming in the first.
Datyona starter Ivan Pineyro tossed five frames and left in line for the win, despite surrendering four runs. He did recorded five strikeouts and allowed five hits, including the Ramirez home run, with two walks.
Brevard County will host its final home game of the season at Space Coast Stadium on Saturday night at 6:35 p.m. Chad Pierce (5-6, 3.51 ERA) will get the start for the Manatees and will face-off against Pierce Johnson (6-1, 2.22 ERA) of the Cubs.
