
Blue Jackets Recall Monsters Left Wing Markus Hannikainen

CLEVELAND - The AHL's defending Calder Cup Champions, the Cleveland Monsters, proudly powered by Constellation, announced Thursday that the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets recalled left wing Markus Hannikainen from his loan to Cleveland for the first time this season. In 11 appearances for the Monsters this year, Hannikainen leads the team with four goals and ranks tied for third among Monsters skaters with seven points. Hannikainen, 23, also earned four penalty minutes and a -2 rating so far this season and was named one of Cleveland's four assistant captains prior to the 2016-17 campaign.
A 6'2", 195 lb. native of Helsinki, Finland, Hannikainen signed a two-year entry-level contract with Columbus as a free agent on April 20, 2015 after going unclaimed in the NHL Entry Draft. In four appearances for the Blue Jackets during the 2015-16 season, Hannikainen's first-career NHL action, the left-handed shooter logged a -2 rating. In 61 career AHL appearances spanning the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons for the Monsters, Hannikainen posted 11-16-27 with a +4 rating and 24 penalty minutes and supplied 3-7-10 with two penalty minutes and a +12 rating in 16 postseason appearances for the Monsters in the 2016 Calder Cup Playoffs en route to capturing the AHL Championship for the first time in franchise history.
Prior to his North American professional career, Hannikainen contributed 22-31-53 with 67 penalty minutes and a +26 rating in 117 Liiga appearances for three teams spanning parts of four seasons in Finland's top professional league from 2011-15.
