Brevard Blue Ducks News Release
Melbourne, Florida â The Brevard Blue Ducks may add another NBA star to the their staff.
Team owner Mike Richman is in discussions with former NBA player Gerald Wilkins to join their organization to head player development. Wilkins would also serve as associate coach, enabling him to help the Blue Ducks on the bench during games.
"I have talked with and visited Gerald on several occasions in the past few months. He has a definite interest, we just haven't been able to reach an agreement yet," commented Richman. If successful, Wilkins would join former NBA players Artis Gilmore and Danny Schayes, who will continue in their roles as team consultants.
In December, the Blue Ducks announced that former Orlando Magic star, Dennis "3D" Scott joined the team as a player and assistant coach. Scott has also taken an equity position within the organization. One of the best 3-point shooters in NBA history, Scott had his NBA record of 11 3-point shots made in a game broken by Los Angeles Lakers' Kobe Bryant several weeks ago, making 12 of his 18 three-points shots against the Seattle Supersonics.
Wilkins, who played 13 years in the NBA, primarily with the New York Knicks, finished his career with the Orlando Magic, where he spent the '96-'99 seasons.
"We would certainly be delighted to have Gerald join the Blue Ducks," said Mike Richman, team owner. His experience in the NBA and continued involvement in sports training, not only in basketball, but other sports as well, would add tremendously to our organization. Between Dennis, Gerald, Danny and Artis, we'd have about 55 years of NBA experience on our staff. That should be a major benefit to our players."
The Blue Ducks are a member of the United States Basketball League (USBL), which serves as a minor league to the NBA. In its 18-year existence, over 150 players have graduated from the USBL to the NBA. Stars such as Avery Johnson, Spud Webb, Monute Bol, Mugsy Bouges, Chris Childs, Anthony Mason and Orlando's own Darrell Armstrong all got their start in the USBL.
Last year in their inaugural season with Horace Grant's twin brother Harvey Grant and former Orlando Magic player Donald Royal at the helm, the Blue Ducks finished with the league's best record at 21-9, including a 12-3 record at home and won the USBL Eastern Conference Championship.
Brevard will kick of its 2003 season on April 19th. All home games will be played at the Clemente Center at Florida Tech in Melbourne. Season and individual tickets are on sale now. To order tickets or for more information, call (321) 751-BLUE or visit their website at www.BrevardBlueDucks.com.
