Brevard Blue Ducks News Release
Melbourne, FL - A Brevard Blue Ducks team that is almost perfect begins the second half of its season Wednesday night with a game against the only team to beat them thus far, as they take on the Next Level Sports All-Stars at the Clemente Center at 7:00 PM.
It has been a season of pleasant surprises for team owner Mike Richman and head coach, Nate "Tiny" Archibald, as they've molded a group of mostly young unknowns and played well against older, more experienced clubs.
"The talent is there and the desire is there," explained Richman. "As long as you have those two ingredients, coupled with a willingness to learn and unselfish team play, you're going to be competitive."
To say the least. The Ducks have used an aggressive team defense and balanced attack, to thwart opponent after opponent. It's that unselfishness on both ends of the court that has propelled Brevard to a 7-1 record.
"We've had a lot of fun so far," said team leader, Mark Christian, Jr. "We realize it's a tremendous opportunity for us and we're making the most of it. "
A high scoring squad that has beat opponents by an average of almost 12 points per game, Brevard was flying high until June 22nd.
After beating Next Level twice in two days, including a 140-99 shellacking on June 18th, the Ducks, 5-0 at the time, were feeling confident when the All-Star team from South Florida came back to face them that night. But agent/coach Mark Hadden reached deep into his agency's roster and brought a deep, experienced team with him back to Brevard. The visitors pounded the Ducks inside all night, with their big men frustrating Brevard's big men. Next Level beat Brevard 106-93, holding the Ducks to their lowest point total all year. B.B. Waldon led the team with 25 points and 14 rebounds. Big Kenny Williams had 21 points and 12 rebounds, three nights after totaling 25 points and 18 boards against Brevard.
"I can't wait to play them again,' said Ducks forward, John Lamers. "I hope they bring a lot of the same big guys. I want to get another crack at them."
On Wednesday, he'll have his chance.
