Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
(Waldorf, MD.) - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (1-3) lost the series opener against the Lancaster Barnstormers (2-3) 7-0, behind a four-run fifth inning.
The Barnstormers were aggressive right out of the gate, putting up a run in the first inning. Darian Sandford led off the game with a single, stealing second on the first pitch of the next at-bat. Tyler Bortnick followed that with a single, easily Sandford from second to open the scoring. Lancaster added another to the total when Ryan Casteel led off the second with a solo homerun, taking an early 2-0 lead.
After a pair of scoreless innings from Alex Boshers (0-1) the Barnstormers added four more to their total in the fifth. Kyle Waldrop reached on an error to begin the frame, with a single and another error loading the bases for the top of the order. After a fielder's choice at the plate got the first out of the inning, Bortnick was hit by a pitch to score Vladimir Frias. Blake Gailen followed that with a two-RBI single, before a sacrifice fly from Joey Terdoslavich brought the score to 6-0.
Steve Johnson (1-0) continued his strong work on the mound for Lancaster, as he allowed just three hits through five scoreless innings. The Barnstormers gave Johnson another run of support in the top of the sixth, as Sandford singled home Kyle Waldrop for the seventh run of the game.
The Lancaster bullpen picked up where the starter left off, continuing to shut down the Blue Crabs offense. Four relievers combined to allow just one hit over the final four innings, locking down the 7-0 Lancaster victory to open the series.
The Blue Crabs return to action Wednesday, May 2nd for the second game of the three-game series against Lancaster. Southern Maryland will send RHP Casey Delgado to the mound, making his debut for Southern Maryland. First pitch is scheduled for 10:35 A.M. on Wednesday at Regency Furniture Stadium.
