New Britain Bees News Release
(Sugar Land, TX) - The Sugar Land Skeeters (5-0) defeated the New Britain Bees (0-5) 5-1 at Constellation Field in the fifth of a six-game season opening series.
New Britain starting pitcher Kyle Simon (0-1) was tagged with the loss, surrendering five runs (four earned runs) on six hits over five innings pitched, walking and striking out two. Sugar Land starting pitcher Ben Griset (1-0) picked up the win after not allowing a run on just two hits in five innings on the mound, walking one and striking out seven.
Sugar Land batted around in the bottom half of the fourth inning against Simon and never looked back, plating four runs on five consecutive hits for the 4-0 advantage, highlighted by an RBI single by Albert Cordero and a two-run double from Courtney Hawkins. New Britain got on the board in the top of the eighth when Angelys Nina cracked a solo home run to left centerfield to cut the deficit to 5-1, the first hit for Nina in a Bees uniform and the first roundtripper of the 2018 campaign for the boys from the Hardware City. That was as close as the visitors would get, as the Skeeters pitching staff combined for 13 strikeouts, the most in a single game against the New Britain offense on the young season. Reid Brignac and Darren Ford led the way for the Bees with a pair of hits each, both tallying their first multi-hit games in 2018. Photo provided courtesy of Megan Murnane.
New Britain hosts the Road Warriors for Opening Night in the Hardware City on Friday, May 4th. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 P.M. It will be Star Wars Night in the Nutmeg State, and the first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a Mayor Erin Stewart Bobblehead and a Magnetic Schedule presented by ACES.
