Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
(Waldorf, MD.) - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (1-4) dropped game two against the Lancaster Barnstormers (3-3) 5-1, behind five strong innings from Lancaster's Tommy Shirley (1-0).
The Barnstormers once again for the scoring started early, putting up a run in the first inning for the second consecutive day. Rico Noel began the game with a bunt single, advancing to second on a hit-by-pitch of Tyler Bortnick. A double steal moved both runners to scoring position, before Joey Terdoslavich picked up an RBI on a ground ball to first that allowed Noel to score the first run of the game.
Casey Delgado (0-1) appeared to find his rhythm on the mound after the early struggles, retiring 11 straight batters into the fourth inning. The Barnstormers rallied with two outs in that inning, starting with a single from Trayvon Robinson. Kyle Waldrop followed that with a double, scoring Robinson from first to take a 2-0 lead.
Back-to-back strikeouts started the fifth, before Lancaster came alive in the inning again. Noel doubled, with a walk to Bortnick following. Another double steal set up a two-RBI single from Blake Gailen, before a Terdoslavich double put up the third run in the inning.
Shirley was strong through the first four innings, allowing just three hits. A single in the fifth put a man aboard for the top of the lineup, with a fielder's choice putting Joey Wong on first. Andrew Daniel doubled off the left field wall, scoring Wong from first to snap a 19-inning scoreless streak for the Blue Crabs offense. Shirley finished the inning with a strikeout and exited the game with a comfortable 5-1 lead.
Southern Maryland threatened in the seventh inning, as Teodoro Martinez got it started with a leadoff walk. A single from Johnny Bladel, and a walk from Daniel loaded the bases with two outs for Ryan Strausborger. Strausborger made solid contact on a line drive, but hit it right at the second baseman to end the inning and strand all three runners.
The bullpens stayed strong after that, with neither side budging for the remainder of the game. Kevin Munson came on in the bottom of the night for the Barnstormers, walking one batter before getting the final three outs to finish off the 5-1 Lancaster win.
The Blue Crabs return to action Thursday, May 3rd for the series finale of the three-game series against Lancaster. Southern Maryland will send RHP Daryl Thompson (1-0, 1.50) to the mound, looking to snap the four-game losing streak. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 P.M. on Thursday at Regency Furniture Stadium.
