Alexandria Blue Anchors News Release
St. Cloud, Minn. - The Alexandria Blue Anchors fell to the St. Cloud Rox 8-2 at Joe Faber Field Saturday night. With one game left before the All-Star break, the Anchors record in the second half sits at 7-10 and 17-33 for the season.
The Rox jumped on the board early and often in the first against starter Corey Fitzgerald. Tim Colwell started the game with a triple and scored on a Clay Williamson single. A single by Adam Martin put two runners on for Luke Weber who brought home Williamson making the score 2-0. On Weber's single he was caught too far off first base and was the first out of the inning but Chris Paul followed with a single moving Martin to third. A walk to Daniel Comstock loaded the bases and a Dustin Breshears single plated Martin giving the Rox a 3-0 lead. A wild pitch by Fitzgerald then scored Paul and after one inning, St. Cloud led 4-0.
The lead grew again in the fifth after Martin, Weber and Paul all singled to load the bases. A sacrifice fly by Comstock brought home Martin putting the Anchors in a 5-0 hole.
It took Alexandria until the sixth to get on the board against Evan Wolf. Andrew Sohn singled to start the frame and went to third on an Albert Baur base hit. Then with one out, Aaron Gretz lifted a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Sohn and pull the Anchors within four.
After pitching a perfect sixth, Ross Slaney ran into trouble in the seventh. Base hits and a hit by pitch loaded the bases with no outs and Dustin Breshears scored Weber on a ground out to third. Then with two outs and two in scoring position, Blake Headley singled to score two and push the Rox lead to 8-1.
The Blue Anchors got back on the board against reliever Jay Flaa in the eighth. Sohn, again, hit a lead-off single and went to second on a passed ball. Gretz singled to put Sohn on third and an infield single by Keegan Dale allowed Sohn to score and make the score 8-2.
Taking the loss was Fitzgerald (0-6) pitching 4.1 allowing five runs on 11 hits and one walk with two strikeouts. Taylor Simpson pitched 2/3 of an inning allowing one hit and struck out one batter. Slaney went two innings giving up three on two hits and one walk. Finishing the game was Andy Johnson pitching a scoreless eight allowing two walks and a hit by pitch while strikeouts.
Minnesota Baseball Academy Player of the Game - Keegan Dale (2B) - Dale has continued his hot hitting and saw his average climb to .305 on the season with three hits in four at bats Saturday.
