Lexington County Blowfish News Release
Florence, S.C. (August 2, 2015) -- The magic number is one. A bases-loaded, nobody-out jam by the wayside set the table for a 6-3 win for the Lexington County Blowfish over the Florence RedWolves on Sunday night.
Catch the final games of the regular season as the Blowfish look to clinch a playoff spot, Monday at 5:05 p.m.
A Ben Holland single, and walks of Nick Nunziato and Ray Lanners later, the Blowfish found themselves in a serious jam. Brandon White (Lander University) entered the game for Erik Davis (USC-Aiken) and cleaned up with nary a run home. White struck out Chris Adams and Adam Renwick, and forced Andrew Castillo to fly out to left.
That cemented the existing 5-3 lead, and the Blowfish tacked on another. Danny Edgeworth (Mercer University) returned to the lineup, and mashed his second RBI knock of the night in the ninth, scoring J.D. Crowe (Francis Marion) for the second time on the night.
Michael Gilroy (Winthrop) shut it down in the bottom of the ninth inning, pitching a 1-2-3 frame, and snapping the four-game losing streak. He would earn his first save of the season in the process.
Trevor Hutto (USC-Aiken) pitched a quality start for the Blowfish, exited the game after six innings with the lead, and picked up his first win of the season.
Avery Greer (University of North Georgia) continued his recent roll, dealing a scoreless seventh inning.
The Blowfish would score on an RBI single by Edgeworth in the first inning. After losing that lead, they responded in the top of the fourth. Austin Garcia (Bethune-Cookman) sized up a fastball, ripping a double into the gap in left-center, scoring Tyler Lancaster (Spartanburg Methodist) and Dalton Duty (University of Central Florida).
An insurance run came home to score on a sacrifice fly by Deric Boone (Auburn University Montgomery), scoring Duty, who gambled on a shallow fly ball out to left field. He sped home, ahead of a dropped sweep tag, and put the Blowfish up two.
While it did not directly affect the scoring much, the Blowfish were gifted opportunities all night by Florence's horrific night in the field. Defensively, they committed six errors.
Crowe paced the offense with three hits, and three runs scored. He extended his career-high hit total to 71.
Lexington County took 10 of the 16 meetings with the RedWolves in 2015. They won the first meeting back on May 26, and this final meeting as well. This season series, in fact, ended with four wins in the past five games against Florence.
Just one win by the Blowfish in the doubleheader with Forest City on Monday, or a loss by the High Point-Thomasville HiToms in their game at Holly Springs, will clinch a playoff spot. The recipient of the fourth spot would take on the Asheboro Copperheads, who clinched the first seed on Saturday. The three seed would play #2 Gastonia.
It all comes down to the final doubleheader when the Blowfish host the Owls at Lexington County Baseball Stadium on Monday at 5:05 p.m. Join the final playoff push by calling the box office at 803-254-FISH, online at blowfishbaseball.com, or at Blowfish on Main (101 East Main Street, Lexington, S.C.).
