Blowfish Take Three of Four from RedWolves
June 25, 2015 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Lexington County Blowfish News Release
Lexington County, S.C. (June 25, 2015) - Now on an extended winning streak, the Lexington County Blowfish defeated the Florence RedWolves 9-1 on Thursday night at Lexington County Baseball Stadium. They have now won nine of the last eleven games, and have also taken three of four games in the series with Florence.
Florence took the lead in the top of the fourth inning, capitalizing on an error. The Blowfish would score nine unanswered runs after that point.
An RBI double by Connor Owings (Coastal Carolina) in the bottom half of the fourth inning scored Madison Stokes (University of South Carolina) to tie the game. It was the first of two RBIs for Owings, and two runs scored for Stokes.
Stokes, along with Owings, would also score on contact resulting in an error in the sixth inning from the bat of Danny Edgeworth (Mercer University). Trevor Bradley (USC-Aiken) continued the offensive surge in the sixth inning by trotting home on a sacrifice fly by Howard Joe (Mercer University).
Owings finished the night with his best night at the dish (4-for-5, 1 run, 2 RBI).
Aided by some fantastic defense in the field, the Blowfish erased several RedWolves scoring opportunities. Jared Williams (University of South Carolina) laid out to rob Kolin McMillen of extra bases in the sixth. Runners on the corners with one out were erased by a critical 6-4-3 double play, turned by Bennette Hill (Shelton State) and Bradley in the eighth, to prevent Ben Holland, one of the hottest hitters in the CPL, from cutting into the lead.
The red-hot Blowfish offense scored five more runs in the final two frames, completing the rout of Florence. Its pitching, however, proved almost impregnable throughout the series.
Robbie Baker (Richmond) pitched seven innings on Thursday, his second quality start of the season, allowing one run, unearned, on two hits. In his last two outings, Baker has lasted 13 innings, allowing two runs on three hits.
Blowfish pitching allowed two total runs in four games with Florence. The series featured three shutouts--two of them in favor of the Blowfish.
