Blowfish Take Loss 5-2

On a rainy Monday night the (7-2) second half Columbia Blowfish traveled north into Virginia to take on the (11-4) second half Peninsula Pilots.

Peninsula put the first run on the board early on in the bottom of the first. The Pilots clean up hitter; Alex Close (Liberty) drove in the first run off of a SAC fly into centerfield, scoring Pilots leftfielder, Brandon Reitano (Mount Olive College).

The Pilots would add two more in the bottom half of the second, with a lead off walk issued to Bill Cullen (VCU), Scott Burkett (Longwood University) doubled to right field scoring Cullen. Pilots shortstop, Josh Silver (Lee University), SAC bunted Burkett over to third, scoring on the play off of a throwing error by Blowfish first baseman Connor Lewis (Lander).

Columbia would get on the board with two of their own in the top half of the seventh. Blowfish shortstop Michael Wilson (Francis Marion) led the inning off with a double to left field. Following him Allen Staton (North Greenville) flew out to right, Wilson tagging up reached third on the play. After Staton's at bat Columbia's right fielder, Erik Barber (UCF) tripled to center field scoring Wilson. Following Barber, the already 2-for-2 Chase Shelton stepped in and doubled down the right field line easily scoring Barber.

The Pilots would add two more runs in the eighth inning off of a SAC bunt from Bill Cullen and an RBI single up the middle from Burkett.

Pilots took this one 5-to-3 over the Blowfish.

The starter for the Blowfish Monday night was Jon Olczak (N.C. State), the right-handed freshmen that tossed five innings giving up three runs off of six hits, two walks and seven strikeouts. Connor Sullivan (Niagra) came on in relief in the bottom half of the sixth. Tossing three innings giving up two runs, both unearned, off of two hits no walks, and three strikeouts. Olczak picked up the loss bringing him to (2-1) on the season.

The starter for the Pilots Monday night was right-hander Josh Heddinger (Georgia Tech), who threw a phenomenal six innings, giving up no runs off of two hits, no walks and five strikeouts. Both hits came off the bat of Blowfish left fielder, Chase Shelton (Charleston Southern). The shutout would come to an end as Pilot's reliever Brandon Vick (Longwood University), came on for two innings of work giving up the only two Blowfish runs off of three hits, no walks, and five streikeouts. Pilot's closer Ryan Cook (Richmond) came on in the ninth and retired the Blowfish down in order 1-2-3 to end the game and picked up the save, his seventh of the season. Heddinger picked up the win bringing him to (3-0) on the season.

The Blowfish are now (7-3) in the second half of the season sitting in first place of the Western Standings of the Coastal Plain League.

The Columbia Blowfish will be back in action at home next Wednesday night July 24th hosting the Martinsville Mustangs with first pitch set for 7:05pm. Gates open at 6:00pm. It's also Wed Wednesday! You can get two Natty or Busch Light cans for $3 from 6-8pm!

The Coastal Plain League is the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 17th season in 2013, the CPL features 14 teams playing North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia.
