Blowfish Sting Clams, Take Series Lead

COLUMBIA, SC - Columbia scored three unearned runs in the final three innings to walk away with an 8-4 victory over the Steamers in game one of their second round Coastal Plain league Petitt Cup series on Wednesday at Capital City Stadium.

The Steamers made their only trip to Columbia for game one and the number four seed Columbia Blowfish, who defeated the number five seed Wilmington Sharks two games to nothing, jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first against Kevin McCarthy (Marist College) on a walk and two singles. Zack Smith earned the RBI.

Edenton bounced back in the top of the second inning off Columbia starter Stuart Pound. Michael Camporeale (University of Washington) doubled and scored when Wigberto Nevarez (Lubbock Christian University) singled him home. Wes Meadows (Otterbein University), who singled, scored on DJ Johnson's (Mercer University) sacrifice fly that gave Edenton a 2-1 lead. Jason Kanzler (University at Buffalo) singled home Nevarez and it was 3-1 Edenton.

The Steamers tacked on a run in the top of the fourth when Meadows singled and scored on Michael Massi's (Mercer University) RBI ground out. Edenton had a chance to score more but a diving catch of a liner off the bat of Johnson ended the inning with runners on base.

Columbia came all the way back to tie the score in the bottom of the fourth. A double and an infield single put runners on second and third and Daniel Torres doubled both runners home. Torres moved to third on a ground out and scored on a McCarthy wild pitch to make it 4-4.

Joel Seddon entered the game for Columbia and absolutely shut down the Steamers offense. He retired all nine Clams he faced in his three innings of work and struck out four.

Columbia took a 5-4 lead on back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the fifth, Joshua Miller earned the RBI.

The Wheels fell of the Steam machine in the bottom of the sixth when Columbia scored two unearned runs to increase their lead. McCarthy gave up a lead-off double to Daniel Torres and was replaced by David Teasley (Mercer University). Jarrod Reed laid down a sacrifice bunt and Teasley threw the ball into right field. The error allowed Torres to score and make it 6-4 'Fish. After another sacrifice bunt, Michael Wilson hit a sacrifice fly to score Reed and make it 7-4 Blowfish.

Edenton got only one hit past the fourth inning, a Madison Beaird (Arkansas Tech University) double in the eighth.

Columbia added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth when Michael Wilson scored on the second error of the inning.

Columbia hit seven doubles in the game, led by Daniel Torres who had three and Graham Saiko had two.

Nevarez led the day for Edenton at the plate, going two-for-four with two singles, a run and an RBI.

McCarthy pitched five plus innings and allowed six runs (five earned) on ten hits and one walk. He struck out three and took the loss. He is now 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the postseason.

Joel Seddon came out of the bullpen in the top of the fifth of a 4-4 game and retired all nine Steamers he faced to earn the win. He is 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the postseason.

The Steamers and Blowfish play game two tomorrow night at Historic Hicks Field in Edenton. The Blowfish need one win in the next two games in Edenton to move on to the CPL Petitt Cup championship round. Gates will open at 6 PM with first pitch at 7 PM.

The Edenton Steamers are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 16th season in 2012, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats.
