Blowfish Shutout HiToms, 9-0, Force Game Three

COLUMBIA, S.C.- On a warm but relaxing night the (31-20) Columbia Blowfish held host to the (26-28) High Point Thomasville HiToms for game number two of the first round in the CPL playoffs.

The Blowfish jumped on top of the HiToms early in the top of the first as Michael Wilson got on with a leadoff HBP, Eros Modena followed with a single to left, as did Chase Shelton, scoring Wilson from second. With no outs and runners on first and second, Allen Staton dribbled one to second beating out the infield single. Being a heads up runner on the play, Eros Modena scored from second on the slow roller. With one out and runners on second and third, Blowfish Catcher, Dylan Kelly singled right up the middle with the infield in, scoring Shelton from third. With two away and runners on the corners, Jake Welch singled to left center scoring Staton from third. The Blowfish took the lead 4-to-0 heading into the top of the second inning.

In the bottom of the second the Blowfish struck again adding one more run to give them a 5-to-0 lead. Michael Wilson improved to 2-for-2 on the night as he singled to centerfield. With two away, Wilson on second, Staton hit a grounder to third, third baseman, Alex Raburn misplayed it allowing Wilson to score easily.

In the Blowfish half of the fifth, leadoff batter of the inning, Connor Lewis reached on an error by the HiToms second baseman, Dylan Kelly followed with a single up the middle. With one away and runners on first and second Blowfish left fielder Jake Welch doubled down the left field line scoring Lewis. With Kelly on third, and Welch at first, Michael Wilson singled to right scoring Kelly and Welch.

Columbia would tally their ninth and final run of the night as Branden Burris tripled down the right field line, as Brandon Mitchell singled up the middle to score him on the next play.

Blowfish pitching was dominant tonight as David Duncan was the starter, tossing six innings, giving up no runs off of three hits, no walks and five strikeouts. Zach Russell-Myers came on for an inning of relief in the seventh allowing no runs, one hit, one walk and one strikeout. Hunter Privette came on in the eighth for an inning, no runs, one hit, no walks, and two strikeouts. Alex Currasco was the final Columbia pitcher of the evening throwing the ninth giving up no runs, one hit, no walks, and no strikeouts. Duncan picked up the win improving him to (4-3) on the season.

Starter for the HiToms Thursday was left-hander Josh Frederick, tossed for 4.2 innings, gave up eight runs, six earned, off of eleven hits, one walk, and two strikeouts. Zach Bernard came on in relief in the fifth, threw for the remaining three and a third innings, giving up one run off of four hits, no walks, and three strikeouts.

With the 9-to-0 win over the HiToms Thursday night, Columbia forces game three that will be held at Historic Capital City Stadium Friday, August the 9th. First pitch is set for 7:05pm. It's also Guaranteed Win Night as well as Crafty Beer Friday!

The Blowfish are now (32-20) on the season and (1-1) in post-season play of the 2013 CPL Playoffs.
