Gastonia, N.C. (August 11, 2015) -- The Gastonia Grizzlies capitalized on an early opportunity, defeating the Lexington County Blowfish in game three of the West Division Final 5-2. The Blowfish will end their season falling one win short of advancing to the Petitt Cup Finals.

Gastonia loaded the bases early, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Brennan Morgan, and a two-run double by Alex Reynolds. They pounced once more in the second inning, as Casey Scoggins drove home Jeremy Howell, who was sacrificed over to second one batter earlier.

The Grizzlies took advantage of an ill-timed error to cap the scoring in the fifth inning.

Halfway through the game, rain stopped action for just over a half hour. The extraordinarily rainy weather pattern affected every game in the playoffs for the Blowfish except for game one of the second round on Sunday.

Down to their final three outs, the Blowfish staged an impressive rally that would eventually fall short. Danny Edgeworth (Mercer University) led off the top of the ninth inning with a monster solo shot over the right field wall.

Brett Auckland (Presbyterian College) followed two consecutive singles by Deric Boone (Auburn University Montgomery) and Anthony Paulsen (Winthrop), slapping a single, scoring Boone to cut the lead to three.

J.D. Crowe (Francis Marion) represented the tying run, but flied out to foul ground with two outs in the ninth, bringing the game, the series, and the season to a close.

The Blowfish had several opportunities to score, just like they did in game two. Of their first five runners in scoring position, they could not push any of them home. Additionally, all of them came with less than one out.

Grizzlies starting pitcher Brandon Casas made short work of any scoring opportunity, pounding the outside part of the strike zone all night. He struck out seven batters in his six innings of work.

Austin Smith was less effective, but pitched well enough to earn the three-inning save.

Taking over for Robbie Baker (Richmond), Erik Davis (USC-Aiken) had perhaps his best effort of the season in a season full of fantastic performances. At one point, Davis struck out five batters in a row. The only run he allowed in his 4.2 innings pitched was unearned.

The Grizzlies will take on the winner of the Edenton/Wilmington series, which will conclude tomorrow evening.
