Blowfish Cool off Copperheads

July 12, 2015 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Lexington County Blowfish News Release

Asheboro, N.C. (July 11, 2015) -- The Asheboro Copperheads had won 13 of the past 15 games. They would not make it 14 of 16, as the Lexington County Blowfish cemented a 6-2 win over the Copperheads on Saturday night at McCrary Park.

At one point down 2-0, the Blowfish staged an impressive rally. It all started with a bases-loaded opportunity during the fifth inning. Deric Boone (Southern Union State) walked in Danny Edgeworth (Mercer University), and Jared Williams' (University of South Carolina) sacrifice fly into right field knocked in Sly Edwards (Charleston Southern) and tied the game.

Edgeworth's RBI double in the sixth broke the tie, as the Georgia native and Austin Garcia (Bethune-Cookman) knocked back-to-back doubles.

Asheboro would attempt to re-take the lead, but starter Charlie Barnes (Clemson) stood in their way. Ryan Colombo and Josh Crump led off the inning with singles, But Barnes would respond with a healthy dose of breaking balls, striking out the side, and ending the significant threat.

Edwards would break the game wide open in the eighth inning. With Tyler Lancaster (Spartanburg Methodist) and Edgeworth on base, Edwards took a fastball for a ride into straightaway center field, blasting a three-run home run, his first of the season, to extend the Blowfish's lead to 6-2.

Barnes ended the night with the win, and a second-straight quality start. He scattered five hits and struck out seven Asheboro hitters. They would only strike in the fourth inning on an error and an RBI double off the bat of CPL All-Star Ryan Mincher.

The Blowfish's relief corps, consisting of Brandon White (Lander University) and Trevor Bradley (USC-Aiken) on this night, did not allow a hit--only one baserunner--over three innings of work. White saw his first game as a member of the Blowfish this season.

In stark contrast to Friday's result, defense proved to be crucial in this game. Barnes robbed Asheboro's Skyler Geissinger of a base hit. Geissinger lasered a drive right back to the box, which the freshman twitched to make a crucial catch and ended the second inning.

A line shot, snagged by Williams, and a groundout to Boone took care of Asheboro's impressive fourth inning.

Edgeworth broke out in this game, going 3-for-4 at the dish, scoring two runs and knocking in one more. Gene Cone (University of South Carolina) reached base every time he came to the plate, singling twice, and walking three times.

The win snapped a three-game losing streak, and sent the Blowfish into the all-star break at 3-4.
