Blowfish Close First Half of CPL Season

June 30, 2014 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Lexington County Blowfish News Release

COLUMBIA, SC- The Columbia Blowfish took to the road on Monday night for the final game of the first half of the Coastal Plain League season.

The Blowfish had a chance to spoil the evening for their I-20 rivals from Florence as well, as the RedWolves came into the game with a chance to clinch the CPL West division first half title on the last day of the first half of the summer season.

A single and a wild pitch plated two runs for the RedWolves in the home half of the first inning against Blowfish starter CD Pelham (Spartanburg Methodist) gave the home team a 2-0 lead after one.

The Blowfish snatched one back in their next at bat as Reed Rohlman (Clemson) who just reported for Columbia, led off the inning with an infield single. Two hits later, Trevor Bradley (Francis Marion) blooped a single into shallow right field to push one across for Columbia.

The next two frames played scoreless until RBI singles from Allen Staton (North Greenville) and Chase Shelton (Charleston Southern) gave Columbia the lead back at 3-2 after 5 innings of play at Cormell Field on the campus of Francis Marion.

CD Pelham gave Columbia 5 strong on the mound, allowing 2 runs on 2 hits. He walked 4 and struck out 6 RedWolves batters including escaping a bases loaded jam.

The Florence RedWolves scored two runs to reclaim the lead back at 4-3 after a walk, a single and a throw away error in the bottom of the 7th inning.

The Columbia Blowfish got their final shot in the top of the 9th inning against RedWolves closer Michael Morrsion (Coastal Carolina).

Bradley got a leadoff single to put a man aboard for Columbia, but two quick outs for Columbia put JD Crowe (Francis Marion) at the dish with a chance to keep the game alive.

Crowe put together a 10 pitch at bat with two outs before walking and giving way to Allen Staton.

Staton fouled out to first base to end the game, and the Columbia Blowfish took the loss 4-3.

The Blowfish cap a 9-19 first half of the CPL season.

Columbia gets a clean slate to start the second half of the season as the Gastonia Grizzlies visit Historic Capital City Stadium to begin the month of July. The Blowfish will have Independence Day Fireworks on July 3rd, 4th, and 5th at The Cap, with their July 3rd contest being an exhibition with the USC Gamecock Alumni team.

The Coastal Plain League is the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 18th season in 2014, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. The CPL has had over 1,200 alumni drafted and 68 of those - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut; while another notable alum - Russell Wilson - won Super Bowl XLVIII.
