Green Bay Blizzard News Release
The Green Bay Blizzard dominated the visiting Iowa Barnstormers in the team's first ever trip to Green Bay, WI. The 6,881 screaming Blizzard fans in attendance solidified themselves as the greatest 9th Man in the land and proved witness to a stellar offensive and defensive performance with a convincing 41-18 win. The University of Wisconsin Badger Marching Band was in town for the game and kicked-off the post game victory festivities with their legendary "5th Quarter".
The ground game of the Green Bay Blizzard began like a snowball. After a 1st quarter dual of defensive prowess, with relentless pressure by the hardnosed Blizzard defense, the first quarter ended in a stalemate. The Blizzard offense steadily began to steam roll through the Iowa Barnstormers with 4 rushing TD's leading the Blizzard to victory and cementing Green Bay's place a top of the Midwest Division standings. FB/LB Tyree Young's 70 rushing yards lead the way and manipulated the clock, slowly putting the Barnstormers defense into a frenzy of play action guesswork. The Blizzard ground attack paid initial dividends after a 16 yard carry by Young at 9:17 in the second quarter.
The Blizzard defensive pass rush continued to keep Iowa QB Joe Brennan (20-38, 217 yards, 2 TD, 1 INT) in a fluttered state, as DL Tyler Birkley and ADT Defensive Player of the Game DL Joe Sykes combined for 4.0 sacks during the game. Sykes, who was awarded his third ADT Defensive Player of the game award in only six games notching 2.0 sacks, 3.5 tackles, 1 forced fumble and one quarterback hurry. In only six contests this season, Sykes is already one sack away from the Blizzard single season record and currently tied for the af2 lead in this category.
The Blizzard defense held the Barnstormers offense to only ten points heading into the final quarter of the contest. When the final quarter got underway it was much of the same for the Blizzard allowing only one final touchdown for the Barnstormers while also adding on a field goal from K Bob Forstrom and a 11-yard touchdown run by FB/LB Gus Tyson.
