Quad City Mallards News Release

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (March 12, 2013) - Brett Lutes scored two goals and picked up two assists and Dan Barczuck also provided a pair of goals as the host Bloomington Blaze scored five times in the third period on the way to an 8-5 win over the Quad City Mallards Tuesday night. With the victory, the Blaze halted a five game losing streak while also stopping the Mallards' five game winning streak.

Bloomington's third period onslaught started when Lutes's drive from the high slot 35 seconds into the third snapped a 3-3 deadlock and gave the Blaze its first lead. The Bloomington advantage doubled when Matthew Larke deflected a power play goal home at 10:07 of the final frame. The Mallards cut the gap to 5-4 at 15:10 with Shayne Toporowski's blast from the top of the right wing circle, but Jon Booras's backhander from the slot put the Blaze back up by a pair just 33 seconds later. After pulling goaltender Neil Conway for an extra attacker, the Mallards again trimmed the margin to one when Darren McMillan scored from the right wing circle with 1:16 left in regulation. The Blaze responded with two goals just twelve seconds apart to emphatically put the Mallards away in the final minute. Lutes's empty netter expanded the Bloomington advantage to 7-5 at the 19:30 mark. Barczuk's breakaway goal capped off the victory at 19:42.

The Blaze's surge started only after Obi Aduba scored from close range to stretch what had been a one goal Mallard lead to 3-1 at 9:18 of the second period. Undaunted by a two-goal deficit, the Blaze would battle back to tie the game by scoring twice in just over two and a half minutes later in the second. Barczuk tipped the second Blaze goal home from the crease at 14:11; at 16:42 David Gilbert's point-blank power play goal evened the score at three.

The evening had started much differently for the Mallards, who opened the scoring just one minute and 47 seconds into the game when Matt Boyd buried a rebound. Jared Walker tied the game from the doorstep at 8:02, but just 30 seconds later Mickey Lang put the Mallards back on top with a wrist shot from the high slot.
