Bakersfield Blaze News Release

The Giants committed 5 errors and issued 6 walks, but the Blaze once again could not capitalize, and despite a stellar outing from Curtis Partch, the Blaze drop a tight one in San Jose, 2-1.

The Blaze did get their first lead in the series, if but briefly. In the top of the 4th, Chris Richburg reached on a 1-out error, and stole second on a botched hit-and-run play. After moving over to third, and a walk to Dayne Read, the Blaze, in an attempt to stay away from a force play, sent the runner from first. The Giants, in a strange move, threw down to second, but with no one covering the bag, the throw went into centerfield, and Richburg came in to score.

The lead would be short-lived, however, as the Giants got one right back in the bottom half. Alex Burg was hit by a pitch with 2 down, and Tyler LaTorre poked a double inside the left field line to score Burg.

The score would remain deadlocked for a couple frames before Tommy Joseph was nailed with a pitch to begin the 6th, and after being replaced by a pinch runner, Ryan Cavan laced a double into the gap in leftcenter to score Juan Ciriaco, and that would prove to be the decisive run.

The Blaze had a couple chances late, but Mitch Lively worked the ninth for his third straight game, and collected save number 7 despite Bakersfield getting the tying run into scoring position. The winner tonight was Giants' reliever Tom Vessella (W, 2-0), while Partch (L, 4-10) suffered the tough luck loss.

The series concludes Sunday at 5pm. The game will be broadcast on internet only at 4:50pm, pregame show and game with Dan Besbris.
