Bellevue Blackhawks News Release
Bellevue, WA. The ABA Bellevue Blackhawks scored a fast break off the opening tip and lead nearly wire-to-wire in posting a thrilling 127-120 victory over the visiting Portland Reign.
Led by Lovel Brown's 15 points, Bellevue built a 63-48 halftime lead. But Portland mounted a steady comeback in the second half and closed the gap to one, 113-112, with 2:48 to play. Bellevue sealed the win with key free throws down the stretch by hometown hero, Rashaad Powell of Renton High School, who was making his 2004-2005 season debut after suffering a broken hand in training camp. Bellevue improved to 5-7 for the year while Portland fell to 4-5. After starting 1-7, the Blackhawks have posted four straight wins. Bellevue's seven losses include five from the powerhouse Utah Snowbears.
Powell led all scorers with 26 points, while Byron Johnson topped all Reign scorers with 19. Alvin Snow chipped in 21 for the Blackhawks and Brandon Payton was the Reign's runner up with 19. Bellevue heads to LA on Tuesday for two games with the Stars, then returns home Saturday for a five game homestand featuring the Fresno Heatwave (Jan 8) and the ABA defending champion Long Beach Jam (Jan 12, 15).
