Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Trailing by a goal late in the second, Jamie Hill hit a post trying to tie the game; Derek Arnold had the same luck on a power play late in the third, and the Waterloo Black Hawks never could even their Wednesday matchup at Young Arena, falling to the Sioux Falls Stampede 5-3.
In a sign of things to come, the Hawks thought they had scored their first goal in the opening minutes, but the chance was ruled to have hit the crossbar. Instead, Sioux Falls struck for the first three. Mark Anthoine cashed in on a shorthanded opportunity 5:48 into the game, then Matt Lindblad finished a chance during a five-on-three power play at 8:23. In the second, a two-on-one rush led to a goal for Michael Voran.
The Hawks bounced back with shorthanded and power play goals by Tyler Barnes. The first was unassisted on a takeaway 11:32 into the second period. Then a minute-and-a-half later, Barnes redirected Zach Palmquist's shot during an advantage.
Shortly after Arnold's shot clanked the iron, Matt Farris came out of the penalty box to score just after his penalty had ended, with 4:50 remaining in the game. An even-later power play allowed Waterloo to close back within one on Dan Sova's goal at 18:07, but Matt Zarbo scored into an open net to seal the decision in Sioux Falls' favor with 16.3 remaining.
Waterloo travels to Des Moines for their next game Friday at 7:05.
