New England Black Wolves News Release
UNCASVILLE, Conn. (November 25, 2014) - The New England Black Wolves of the National Lacrosse League have signed former Sacred Heart football captain Bill O'Brien to a free agent contract.
A native of Lafayette, N.Y., the 26-year-old O'Brien was a three-year starter at defensive end and outside linebacker. As a senior captain in 2010, he had 49 tackles, four sacks, 6.5 tackles for losses and one interception.
O'Brien played lacrosse in high school and was a teammate of Black Wolves' veteran Brett Bucktooth during the 2014 Can-Am Junior B box lacrosse season. Both played for the Onondaga Redhawks.
"I'm really excited," O'Brien said. "It's the top level of lacrosse you can play, so I just want to come in and do whatever it takes, and try to bring some of the toughness from football on to the NLL floor."
At 6-foot-4 and 240 pounds, O'Brien will compete for a spot as a defender.
"He's the reason why we spend so much time on the free agent camp," coach Blane Harrison said. "If we had not done our due diligence in the free agent side, we probably would not have known about Bill O'Brien. He has size, speed, agility and meanness, and seems like a really good guy to boot. We feel like we have the makings of a very good defenseman in this league."
The Black Wolves open the season January 2nd, hosting the Buffalo Bandits at 7 p.m. at Mohegan Sun Arena. For more information, or to purchase tickets, call 1-844-LAX-WOLF (529.9653) or email tickets@blackwolves.com.
