Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Although the Lincoln Stars were the United States Hockey League Western Conference champions, the Waterloo Black Hawks unseated them in the playoffs and will represent that half of the league in the Clark Cup championship series following a 6-2 victory at Young Arena Monday.

For the fourth time in the series, the Black Hawks scored multiple goals during the opening 20 minutes. After a power play had ended, A.J. Michaelson feathered a pass out of the right wing corner to Alex Barron in the high slot. With a couple of strides to the net, Barron rifled a shot past the blocker side of Jackson Teichroeb nudging Waterloo ahead at 9:17. Later in the frame, the Hawks refused to be evicted from the Lincoln zone. Following a long stretch on offense and a good keep-in at the blue line, Eddie Wittchow dodged a shot blocker and let go a low wrist shot. The rebound was jammed in by Jamie Hill at 18:49.

In spite of good Stars chances in the second period, they couldn't cut into the Hawks lead, and instead Waterloo doubled the margin. Hill added to the lead 35 seconds into the frame, banking a shot in from behind the net off of the back left shoulder of Teichroeb. The Hawks struck again during a power play at 13:08 when Ian McCoshen fired a shot to the top glove-side corner. Seconds earlier, Stephon Williams had turned away a one-on-one opportunity for Kevin Roy, one of 16 Stars chances in the period.

Any expectation that the Stars would let the Hawks coast to victory were quickly corrected in the third. Roy scored 2:33 into the period on a setup from behind the net by Luke Johnson. Several more chances followed, and Lincoln struck again with 8:09 remaining as Roy had the last touch on a three-on-two rush. However, Waterloo ended the comeback when Hill sprang Taylor Cammarata for a breakaway goal with 3:04 remaining. It was Hill's fourth point of the night. Josh Nenadal added a final score when a power play rebound from Wittchow's initial shot found him at 17:53.

With the victory, the Black Hawks advance out of the best-of-five series three-games-to-one. Waterloo's next opponent is the Anderson Cup-winning Green Bay Gamblers. The series will start with Games One Saturday in Green Bay. Visit waterlooblackhawks.com from more specifics regarding the series schedule on Tuesday.
