Black Hawks Break Losing Streak Versus Stars

The Waterloo Black Hawks hockey team put together a solid weekend versus a pair of Western Conference foes, highlighted by the teams first victory in Lincoln since 10/30/99. Waterloo now is 7-2-1 in their last ten games.

Friday January 9, 2004- Tri-City 2 Waterloo 0

The Waterloo Black Hawks battled the best of the USHL on Friday in the Tri-City Storm at the Tri-City Arena in Kearney, Nebraska. The two teams played an entertaining defensive chess match, which in the end saw the Storm skate to a 2-0 victory.

Both teams skated a scoreless opening period, in which Tri-City out shot the Hawks 9-4. The Storm took advantage of a Waterloo penalty late in the second to take the 1-0 lead on a Bill Thomas power play goal. The game remained 1-0 till the final minute when Rastislav Spirko scored an empty net goal with 17 seconds left in the contest for the 2-0 win. Kevin Regan (South Boston, MA) stopped 16-17 shots in net, for Waterloo as each team had 18 shots on goal.

Saturday January 10, 2004- Waterloo 7 Lincoln 5

Saturday the Hawks traveled to the Ice Box in Lincoln to take on the surging Stars. Waterloo scored the game's first two goals and never trailed on their way to the 7-5 win.

Waterloo's Garrett Regan (Elk River, MN) and David Meckler (Highland Park, IL) scored goals a minutes and 23 seconds apart in the opening period to put the Hawks up 2-0. Lincoln cut the advantage to 2-1after one courtesy of a Derek Whitmore power play goal.

In the second Waterloo increased the lead to 3-1 on a Matt Fornataro (Calgary, Alberta) even strength goal early in the second. The Stars battled back to tie the contest on a pair of Adam Bartholomay goals. Waterloo regained the lead with just less than four minutes left in the second on a Tim Madsen (Elk River, MN) goal. Lincoln tied it again early in the third as Whitmore struck for his second goal of the contest to knot the game at four.

Waterloo's Peter MacArthur (Clifton Park, NY) then scored a pair of goals in under three minutes to increase the Hawk lead to 6-4. Lincoln got within one late in the contest, but Fornataro capped off the Waterloo win with an empty net goal that was his fourth point of the night. Regan stopped 23-28 shots for the win in net. The victory snapped a 12 game losing streak in Lincoln for Waterloo.

Waterloo now prepares for a busy week ahead in which they will play three games in three days, starting with a road contest at St. Louis on Friday, followed by home contests versus Sioux City on Saturday at 7:05 PM, Chicago on Sunday at 6:05 PM. Tickets are still available and can be purchased at the Young Arena box office on Wednesday and Thursday from 11:30 AM- 5:30 PM, Friday from 11:30 AM- 5:00 PM and Saturday and Sunday from 11:30 AM- game time.
