Black Bears Win Seven Straight
June 29, 2011 - West Coast League (WCL)
Cowlitz Black Bears News Release
Longview-Kelso: June 28, 2011: Matt Maurer (Pepperdine) led the Cowlitz Black Bears on the hill to secure a rain-soaked victory. In his first start as a member of the club, the lefty went six complete innings, struck out seven, and put six zeroes on the scoreboard. That effort pushed the scoreless streak for the Bend Elks to 15 against Cowlitz. His counterpart buckled in the 4th inning, highlighted by an RBI triple by Kyle Garlick (University of Oregon) to open scoring.
Garlick would come home to score on a wild pitch, and the Black Bears would add single tallies in the 5th and 7th, which brought on Ryan Yuengel (University of Missouri) for the 9th. The Elks would not go quietly, facing the prospect of back-to-back shutouts. A hit-and-run with a man on second gave Bend their first run of the series, but they could do no more as Cowlitz stretched their West Coast-leading win streak to seven games.
The win solidified the Black Bears' hold on third place in the West Division. The team is 1.5 games behind leader Corvallis, and a lone game behind Kitsap, who is in second place. The loss dropped Bend to 2.5 out and sole possession of 4th place.
Tomorrow the team will play for their second consecutive sweep and eight consecutive victories. The team will celebrate Burgerville Family Night, where $28 is enough for 4 general admission tickets, 4 hot dogs, and 4 sodas. In a fortuitous bit of scheduling, the team will also feature Guaranteed Win Night. Should Cowlitz falter, all fans in attendance will receive a general admission ticket to a future home game.
