Berkshire Black Bears News Release

PITTSFIELD-The Berkshire Black Bears will begin their 2003 season on May 22 with three road games against last years defending league champion New Jersey Jackals. They begin their second season at Wahconah Park in Pittsfield on June 2nd with a three game home stand against the Quebec Le' Capitals. The 2003 schedule has been increased from 90 games to 92 games.

Black Bears President/General Manager Mike Kardamis said "We are really looking forward to our second season in Pittsfield which is a great baseball community. We like the fact that we don't start at home until June 2nd because fans are really just getting into a baseball frame of mind by then and hopefully the weather will be warmer." The Black Bears will play against two new opponents in 2003; Bangor Maine, which purchased the former Adirondack Lumberjacks, and Lynn Massachusetts, which welcomes the return of professional baseball next year.

The Black Bears will increase picnic space at Wahconah Park by replacing the first base side bleachers with a large new picnic area. "Our fans requested more picnic space that they can view the game from so in the next couple of weeks we will be taking those bleachers down," said Kardamis. The plan recently received the unanimous support of the Pittsfield Parks Commission.

Game times will remain the same, 7:05 for games Monday through Saturday and 2:05 on Sunday afternoons. Two games however will start at special times. The Monday June 2nd home opener against Quebec and the July 4th game against New Jersey will start at 6:05. "We are very excited about the schedule, particularly having a home game on the 4th of July. The 2003 baseball season is going to be a great one in Pittsfield," said Kardamis.

The Black Bears begin 2003 in the newly named Northeast League, which is comprised of opponents in Brockton and Lynn MA., Allentown PA., Elmira NY., Jersey City NJ., Bangor ME., and Quebec.
