Maryland Black Bears News Release

The Maryland Black Bears and Northeast Generals took the ice on Saturday night after a gritty contest the night before that saw Maryland shut out Northeast 4-0. The rematch showed no love lost between these two teams on Valentine's Day, as the Generals racked up 97 penalty minutes in a second period filled with scrums and a war of words. In the end, the Black Bears prevailed 4-1 on the back of two goals from Trey Hinton and an excellent team effort.

Northeast struck in the first period with a goal from forward Alejandro Blum to make it 1-0 Generals early. Forward Jaden Sikura scored on a wrap-around goal in the second period to level the game at 1-1. Then, a check from behind was thrown by Northeast defenseman Robert Savaglio on Maryland forward Kristofers Krumins, who was injured on the play but got up under his own power. This led to a power play goal from forward Josh Frenette, who buried a one-time shot from the slot past Generals' goalie Keagin Wilson to make it 2-1 Black Bears. Another hit from behind was thrown by Northeast forward Kody Moyer, furthering the penalty trouble for the Generals. A line scrum ensued, and Sikura dropped the gloves with Savaglio as Sikura stood up for his teammate. This led to a five-on-three goal from forward Trey Hinton, who jammed the puck into an empty net. This led to multiple unsportsmanlike conduct penalties against various Generals players and head coach Bryan Erikson, who was ejected.

The scoring concluded in the third period when Hinton connected with defenseman Vincent Glos on a give-and-go chance, where Hinton crashed the net and scored on a backhand shot cutting across the slot for a 4-1 lead. Goaltender Dom Gatto made 13 saves as Maryland won 4-1.

The Black Bears get the next weekend before returning to Piney Orchard Ice Arena on Friday, February 27th, against the New Hampshire Mountain Kings, with puck drop set for 7:00 p.m. ET. All games can be streamed on NATV.
