Cowlitz Black Bears News Release
Bend: July 14, 2011: *Every area in which the Cowlitz Black Bears excelled during their five-game winning streak turned into a weakness in the last game of the season series against the Bend Elks.
The offense, riding high after four consecutive games with more than ten hits, only managed six against the Elks. Usual stalwarts Kyle Garlick (University of Oregon) and Braxton Miller (Lewis-Clark St.) went a combined 0-for-7 with a walk. Beau Didier (LSU) provided the lone highlight - a solo home run in the third inning that gave the Black Bears a 3-1 lead.
The Elks would take the lead for good in the 6th inning when Cowlitz starter Stewart Fewel (LCC) faced six batters without recording an out. Jake Doller (Kansas St.) came on and got the team out of the inning, but the six runs scored by Bend would prove too much to overcome. Cowlitz did load the bases in the 9th inning in a last-gasp rally, but could not get a run across.
The Black Bears return to Story Field starting July 19th against the Kitsap Blue Jackets. It will be Azteca $2 Tuesday with general admissions tickets, hot dogs, soda, and beer all just two dollars, along with Kelso Schools Spirit Night. Following that will be Burgerville Family Night on Wednesday and Thirsty Thursday on Thursday.
