Bisons, PawSox Split Saturday Twinbill

April 9, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Buffalo Bisons News Release

The Bisons first doubleheader of 2016 ended with a win and a walk-off loss.

Forced to play two following Opening Night's rainout in Pawtucket, the Herd defeated the PawSox, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon before their IL North division rival rebounded for a 4-3 walk-off victory in the nightcap from McCoy Stadium.

Bisons' pitchers dominated in game one of the twinbill as Scott Diamond, Pat Venditte and David Aardsma combined to strike out nine. Buffalo then held a 3-2 lead in game two before Sam Travis' RBI-single with one out in the seventh handed the Herd the defeat.

Making his Bisons debut, Diamond fired five innings of one-run baseball for the game one win. He struck out five without issuing a walk and allowed just four singles. He retired seven in a row at one point and wasn't scored upon until the fourth inning on Chris Marrero's two-out single.

Switch-pitcher Pat Venditte also made his Bisons' debut in game one, but only used his right arm to strike out the side in the sixth inning. David Aardsma earned the save with a 1-2-3 seventh, adding the ninth strikeout.

After being shutout in Friday's season opener, the Bisons struck for the only two runs they would need in the first inning of game one. Domonic Brown homered off PawSox starter Sean O'Sullivan and Casey Kotchman added an RBI-double four batters later. Kotchman singled in the insurance run in the third inning to put the Herd up 3-0.

All three Bisons runs in Saturday's game two came in the second inning, erasing an early 2-0 deficit. Andy Burns' infield single with the bases loaded scored Kotchman and Brown followed with a two-run knock through the right side.

That 3-2 advantage held until the fifth with Ryan Tepera gave up a pair of singles and Travis greeted reliever Patrick McCoy with a line drive into center. Travis got the better of the Bisons' lefty again in the seventh, singling to left for the game-winning hit.

The Bisons will look for the series split Sunday afternoon with a 1:05 p.m. first pitch from McCoy Stadium. Lefty Wade LeBlanc is scheduled to start for the Herd.

BISONS NOTES:

Wade LeBlanc will start on Sunday because RHP Scott Copeland was placed on the temporarily inactive list on Saturday...RHP Chad Jenkins started game two for Buffalo and allowed two runs on five hits in 2.1 innings of work. With LHP Chad Girodo (1.2 IP) also throwing in game two, all eight Bisons relievers have now scene action in 2016...Domonic Brown finished the doubleheader a combined 3-7 with a double, a home run and three RBI.
