Montgomery Biscuits News Release
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Jose Mujica delivered his fifth win in his last six starts to propel the Biscuits (2-1) to an 8-2 win over their interstate rivals the Birmingham Barons (1-2) Saturday night at Riverwalk Stadium.
Biscuits starter Mujica (7-4) had another great performance, twirling six innings while surrendering one run on seven hits and striking out a season-high seven in the win. His only allowed run was in the third on an RBI-double from Jake Peter, but the Biscuits provided him with enough runs in the early going to earn the victory.
Barons starter Matt Cooper (1-7) had his worst start of the season, allowing eight runs (seven of them earned), on nine hits, while striking out two over four innings in the loss. Montgomery erupted for four runs in the first inning off Cooper, thanks to a two-run homer from Joe McCarthy, an RBI-triple by Justin Williams, and a sac fly by Michael Russell that put the Biscuits up, 4-0. Earlier in the inning Biscuits center fielder, Braxton Lee would smack a single to center and catcher Justin O'Conner a double to right to complete the team cycle.
Montgomery added another run in the bottom of the second to make it 5-0 before the Barons were finally able to get on the board in the third thanks to an RBI-double by Peter that made it 5-1. The Biscuits put the game away in the fourth when they brought across three more runs, beginning with Grant Kay, who drove in the first run with an RBI-grounder, and then McCarthy swatted an RBI-triple to make it 7-1. Cooper then threw a wild pitch with O'Conner at the plate that brought McCarthy home from third and made it 8-1.
Nick Basto brought across the Barons final run in the seventh with an RBI-single to make it 8-2, and then Biscuit relievers Jordan Harrison, Ian Gibaut and Mike Broadway slammed the door by combining to throw 2.2 scoreless innings while striking out two to secure the win.
Montgomery can take the series tomorrow with another victory and will look to get to five hundred at home this season for the first time, when Fernando Baez (1-3) takes the hill against Spencer Adams (5-6) Sunday night at 5:35 PM.
