Jackson Generals News Release
Montgomery, Ala. â The Jackson Generals, the Double-A affiliate of Major League Baseball's Arizona Diamondbacks, closed their series against the Montgomery Biscuits with a tight 4-3 loss at Riverwalk Stadium on Sunday. The Generals (55-42) split their four-game series with the Biscuits (63-37), dropping to 13-14 on the year in games decided by one run.
In his best start as a General, Cole Stapler contributed five innings to Jackson's cause, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits with one batter walked and one strikeout. Stapler departed after only 66 pitches, having conceded three stolen bases and just one hit for extra bases. In his place, Kevin McCanna (3-5, 2.79 ERA) spun a pair of scoreless frames before running into trouble in the eighth. A two-out, run-scoring infield single from Montgomery's Miles Mastrobuoni broke a 3-3 tie to put Montgomery in front for good.
To combat the Generals' high-powered offense, Montgomery used an opener for the third time in the series, starting with three scoreless innings from southpaw Matt Krook before turning to veteran Jason Garcia (3-0, 2.81 ERA). Neither Krook nor Garcia allowed more than one Jackson hit, but their four combined walks took a toll. Krook's third-inning lead-off walk of Evan Marzilli helped create the first Generals run, with Marzilli scoring on an RBI single from Jeffrey Baez. Jackson was held scoreless from there until the sixth, when Garcia issued a one-out walk to Daulton Varsho. Two batters later, Pavin Smith hit his eighth home run of the year, a two-run shot that evened the score at 3-3. Unfortunately, the Generals couldn't muster anything further, as Garcia and reliever Phoenix Sanders (S, 13) retired nine of the last eleven Jackson hitters to secure the series split.
