Montgomery Biscuits News Release

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Suns (39-29; 80-59) made it interesting in the ninth inning, but the Montgomery Biscuits (45-24; 80-59) did just enough to send Sunday night's game at The Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville to extra innings and win it, 6-4, in the 10th.

Biscuits closer Tim Corcoran blew a save by allowing two runs in the ninth on an A.J. Ellis home run and a David Nicholson double. The potential winning run was at third with one out, but Corcoran escaped taking the loss by getting an infield groundout and a short fly out to end regulation.

The inning erased the potential for a 16th win by Biscuits starter Chris Mason, who would have become the first Southern Leaguer since 1998 to reach that number. Instead, the Southern League's Most Outstanding Pitcher took a no-decision for his five innings of work.

Mason was uncharacteristically wild in the first inning, walking four and hitting a batter. The hit batsman and the final walk each scored runs, giving the Suns an early 2-0 lead without the benefit of a hit. Mason was outstanding the rest of the way, though, allowing only one more basrunner in his five innings while striking out four.

Mason finished his outstanding regular season at 15-4 with a league-leading 2.57 ERA. The Biscuits were 23-5 in games that he started, including 5-0 when those games went to extra innings. In the second half, the Biscuits were 13-1 in his starts, incuding 11 wins in a row.

The Biscuits built Mason a lead in the second through the fourth innings against Jacksonville starter Alvis Ojeda. In the second inning, Chris Nowak doubled and scored on a Pat Cottrell single. Two more scored in the third on a two-out double by Gaby Martinez and the Biscuits got their fourth run on a solo home run by Erold Andrus.

Andrus also robbed a home run in the seventh nning, leaping up to reach over the right field wall and take a solo home run away from Nicholson.

That play was part of a perfect three innings of relief for Nick DeBarr, who carried the game to the ninth.

Montogmery's 10th inning saw runs score on a Cottrell sacrifice fly and a Patrick Breen single. In the bottom of the inning, Jon Barratt pitched a perfect inning and was credited with the win by scorer's discretion.

The Biscuits and Suns are now tied for the league's best overall record. The final game of the regular season is Monday at 2:05 CST. Montgomery lefty Mike Prochaska will pitch against Jacksonville lefthander Greg Miller.

If the Suns win, they will become the first team in the history of the Southern League to hold the league's best record but miss the playoffs.
