Biloxi Shuckers News Release

BILOXI, MS - In a back-and-forth affair on Sunday, the Biloxi Shuckers fell just short in a 6-5 loss to the Birmingham Barons. The Shuckers came back twice to tie the game and almost a third time in the ninth after a protested ground rule double.

Trailing 6-4 going to the bottom of the ninth inning, the Shuckers (10-14, 46-47) got a double from Javier Betancourt and single by Wendell Rijo to begin the frame. After Barons' reliever Brandon Brennan struck out Johnny Davis and Tyrone Taylor, Blake Allemand hit a line drive off of the right field wall, which landed behind the foul pole that is on the field of play at MGM Park. Betancourt and Rijo scored on the Allemand "triple" to tie the game at 6-6. After a discussion by the umpires, Allemand's triple was changed to a ground rule double, sending Rijo's tying run back to third base. Shuckers' manager Mike Guerrero was ejected while pleading his case to crew chief Alex Mackay.

The Barons (10-14, 36-57) intentionally walked Michael Choice and induced a ground ball fielders' choice from Jacob Nottingham to end the game.

Taylor Williams started for the Shuckers and established a season-high in pitches thrown for the third straight start. The righty gave up two runs in 3.0 innings, allowing five hits and striking out three in his continued return from Tommy John surgery.

The Barons jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single from Mason Robbins, but the Shuckers tied it up in the second on a solo home run from Dustin DeMuth . Nick Basto returned serve for the Barons in the third with a solo home run of his own.

Birmingham extended their lead to 4-1 with a Keon Barnum two-run home run off Tayler Scott (L, 4-6) in the fourth. The Shuckers would once again storm back to tie the game in the fifth, as Davis hit his second home run of the season and Allemand and Nottingham followed with RBIs off starter Spencer Adams.

In the sixth, Scott allowed an unearned run to score after DeMuth made a throwing error on a squeeze attempt. Josh Uhen and Quintin Torres-Costa kept the deficit at one with scoreless innings of relief, but the Barons added an unearned insurance run in the ninth off Travis Hissong .

Jake Johansen (W, 1-1) and Brennan (S, 9) finished the game for the Barons, holding on to the one-run victory to clinch the series.

The Shuckers look to salvage the final game of the series on Monday night as Aaron Wilkerson faces off against Tanner Banks. First pitch is at 6:35 pm CT with live coverage beginning at 6:15 pm on Cruisin' WGCM AM-1240/FM-100.9 and the Shuckers Radio Network. The game will also be available at biloxishuckers.com, MiLB.TV and TuneIn Radio
