Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
The Shorebirds competed, scrapped, and battled for nine innings, but found themselves unable to deliver a clutch hit when it counted as they fell 5-3 on Wednesday night in Kannapolis. After the Intimidators took a two-run lead in the sixth, Delmarva stranded two runners in the seventh, left the bases-loaded aboard in the eighth, and ended the night by leaving the tying runners on once again in the ninth. Through the nine innings, the Shorebirds scored just three times, stranding 12 base-runners. All in all, it amounted to their fourth straight loss.
Once again, the Intimidators took an early lead with two runs off Shorebird starter Zach Britton in the first. While the first four Kannapolis batters all reached base, Britton was able to limit the damage and keep Delmarva in the game.
Though Kannapolis added another tally in the third to take a 3-0 lead, Delmarva's offense finally awakened in the fourth. Joe Nowicki began the frame with his team-leading eleventh double of the season. A batter later, Nowicki took third base on a wild pitch and scored on a throwing error by Kannapolis catcher Danny Jordan.
Nowicki provided more offense in the fifth. With Jason White and Matt Angle in scoring position with two outs, Delmarva's right-fielder pounded a clutch two-out RBI single to tie the game at three. On the night, Nowicki had three hits for the Shorebirds.
The game remained knotted at three into the sixth, wherein Kannapolis recorded a clutch two-out hit of their own. Intimidators third-baseman Joe Persichina drove in Jose Martinez to re-give Kannapolis a 4-3 lead, and Persichina would score a batter later on Jordan's single.
Although Delmarva threatened offensively in each of the final three innings, there were no more runs to be had. After three straight losses in Kannapolis and four straight overall, the Shorebirds hope to salvage the final game of their road trip on Thursday night from Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium.
