Lake County Captains News Release


(Charleston, WV) - Kelvin De La Cruz tossed six scoreless innings as the Captains defeated the West Virginia Power 5-0. The Captains (25-14) are 6-1 on the road trip and 16-6 on the road this season. They remain in first place three games ahead of Greensboro. This was the Captains sixth shutout this season.

The Captains got on the board first off Power starter Dan Merklinger when Adam White tripled. White would score on Lucas Montero's single and the Captains led 1-0. The Captains tacked on two more runs in the fifth off reliever Reed Dickert when with two out and two on, Dustin Realini singled to center field scoring Adam White from second base. Karexon Sanchez who was going from first to third on the hit, scored when the center fielder Caleb Gindl's throw sailed into the third base dugout and the Captains led 3-0. The Captains added an insurance run in the eighth off of Power reliever Wes Etheridge on a Michael Valadez sacrifice fly to make it 4-0. Mark Thompson hit a solo homer in the ninth inning to cap off the scoring at 5-0.

Kelvin De La Cruz got the win (3-2, 1.77) going six scoreless innings on five hits, walking three and striking out five. Dallas Cawiezell relieved De La Cruz and pitched two scoreless innings walking one and strking out four. Jonathan Holt followed Cawiezell and pitched the ninth inning giving up only one hit. Dan Merklinger took the loss to go 0-2. The Captains wrap up the series and the road trip on Thursday as LHP Ryan Morris (5-0, 2.45) heads to the mound against the Power's RHP Evan Anundsen (3-3, 3.96). The Captains return home to Classic Park on Friday, May 16th to face the Lexington Legends. Friday is the second of twenty Fireworks Extravaganzas at Classic Park this season. All Friday and Saturday home games from here on out will be followed by fireworks. Cleveland Indians starting pitcher Jake Westbrook and reliever Joe Borowski are expected to pitch for the Lake County Captains during the upcoming home stand. Westbrook is scheduled to make a start for the Captains on Saturday May 17th at Classic Park against the Lexington Legends. Game time is 7:05 PM and the game will feature a post game fireworks extravaganza. This is the second start for Westbrook at Classic Park. He made a rehab appearance last year as well.

Borowski is expected to pitch for the Captains on Monday, May 19th also against Lexington. Monday's game time is 7:05 PM and it's another Buck Night at Classic Park featuring $1 hot dogs, sodas, and beer.
