Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release

SIOUX FALLS, SD - The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks dropped the series finale in walk-off fashion 6-5 before 2,638 at the Bird Cage versus the Sioux Falls Canaries on Wednesday night.

The score was tied 4-4 after four innings of play. Both starters, Joe Bircher of Sioux Falls and Taylor Stanton for Fargo-Moorhead, gave up ten hits or more in their respective outings. Ryan Pineda hit a two-out two run homer in the second and R.J. Perucki and Brett Balkan had RBIs in the fourth for the Canaries. Jason Repko also homered in the third for Sioux Falls. Each pitcher gave up runs in the second, third and fourth frames before pitching scoreless fifth and sixth innings.

Sioux Falls jumped ahead in the bottom of the seventh inning. Stanton came out for the beginning of the frame and gave up a solo homer to David Bergin ending the right-handers night while the Canaries pulled ahead 5-4. Stanton went six innings allowing five runs (four earned) on eleven hits with a walk and six strikeouts.

Fargo-Moorhead would respond in the top of the eighth. Pineda and Penprase led off with back-to-back singles followed by a Chad Mozingo walk two batters later loading the bases. Joe Bonfe would hit a fly ball to deep left scoring Pineda on the sacrifice and tying the contest 5-5.

Rookie lefty Nick Cooney, who had replaced Stanton back in the seventh, remained on for the ninth. He had retired seven straight as he sat down the former big-leaguer Repko with a swinging strikeout to start the ninth bringing Jerome Pena to the plate. With a 1-1 count, Pena belted his seventh homer of the season giving the Birds the 6-5 win in the series finale.

Stanton walked away with the no-decision while Cooney (1-1), though stellar, takes the loss for his mistake pitch in the ninth. Chase Johnson (5-1) earned the win for his work in the ninth.

Fargo-Moorhead has it's three game win streak snapped and now sits at 37-52 while Sioux Falls evades the sweep and improves to 33-56. Though the 'Hawks lost, they still claim their sixth consecutive series win. The team will take tomorrow off before traveling to Winnipeg for a weekend set with the Goldeyes before returning home to Newman Outdoor Field to wrap up the season with a seven game homestand starting on Monday, September 1st.
