Big third period lifts Rockford over Missouri

Rockford, Ill.- A three goal third period outburst broke open a tight game on Saturday night, as the Rockford IceHogs knocked off the Missouri River Otters 5-2 at the Family Arena in St. Charles, Mo. Each team netted a goal in the first and second frame before Rockford lit the lamp three times in the final period to capture the win.

Rockford grabbed the early 1-0 lead when winger Greg Barber's shot deflected off of a River Otters skater and past goalie Kevin Reiter at 1:11 of the opening frame. Missouri responded at 10:15 to tie the contest when Damian Surma beat Hogs net-minder Ronnie Vogel over the shoulder.

In the second period, Missouri took the 2-1 advantage with an unassisted goal by center Lars Peterson. The Hogs tied the contest at two on the power play with just eight seconds left in the middle frame with a Jason Notermann tally.

Notermann in third period started Rockford's barrage with his second tally of the night at the 11:48 mark, his team leading third of the season. Rookie center Steve Yetman and center Olivier Proulx gave Rockford some breathing room late. Yetman beat Reiter at 16:36 for a two goal lead and Proulx shot home an empty netter at 18:54 to seal Rockford's second straight win.

The Hogs out shot Missouri 30-17 in the contest. Vogel make 15 saves to earn the win. Rockford finished the night 1-for-4 on the power play and held the Otters to 0-for-2.

Next Home Game: Sunday, October 23 vs. Motor City Mechanics.
