Biloxi Shuckers News Release
MOBILE, AL - It took an extra inning, but the Biloxi Shuckers rode four home runs to a 9-8 win over the Mobile BayBears in game one of their Sunday doubleheader. With the win, the Shuckers ensured a winning record in the first half of their season.
Michael Choice started things off in the first inning, as the Shuckers outfielder took Osmer Morales out to left field to put the Shuckers up 2-0.
Taylor Williams made his first appearance since late May in a short start for the Shuckers. The righty, recovering from Tommy John surgery, struck out two in a scoreless first inning but left the bases loaded and threw 27 pitches in his return to the rotation.
Wuilder RodrÃguez relieved Williams in the second and allowed four runs, the biggest blow coming in the form of a three-run home run from Sherman Johnson. The Shuckers tied the game back up in the third with a Choice RBI groundout and Jacob Nottingham's solo home run.
In the fourth, Wendell Rijo singled with two outs and scored the go-ahead run on a triple from Johnny Davis. The speedy center fielder finished a home run shy of the cycle and also stole his 18th base of the season.
RodrÃguez left the game with two runners on in the fourth, and Nick Ramirez allowed the tying run to score. But the Shuckers lefty, named to the Southern League All-Star team earlier in the day, escaped further trouble and took the game into the sixth inning.
In the fifth, Dustin DeMuth gave the Shuckers another lead with an RBI single and Angel Ortega followed with a two-run blast to make the score 8-5.
When the BayBears threatened against Ramirez in the sixth inning, Matt Ramsey (W, 3-1) entered for the four-out save. The All-Star righty was one out away from ending the game in the seventh, but a two-run triple from Michael Hermosillo tied the game 8-8. The blown save was just Ramsey's second in 18 chances this season.
In the top of the eighth inning, Javier Betancourt laced a solo home run to left field off Tyler Warmoth (L, 0-1) to put Biloxi up 9-8. Josh Uhen (S, 1) pitched around a leadoff walk in the eighth to earn his first save of the year.
The Shuckers and BayBears meet one more time on Sunday night for the nightcap of their doubleheader before the first half of the season comes to a close. Bubba Derby starts for the Shuckers opposite Grayson Long
