Norfolk Tides News Release

Norfolk plated five fifth inning runs and Jake Arrieta tossed seven strong innings in a 5-2 win over Gwinnett Wednesday night at Harbor Park.

The Tides sent nine men to the plate in the decisive fifth frame, with the big blow of the inning a bases loaded triple down the left field line off the bat of Joey Gathright. Justin Turner and Brandon Snyder also collected run-scoring hits in the frame off of Braves starter John Halama (4-5).

The five runs of support were more than enough for Arrieta (5-6), who matched his season-high with seven innings pitched. Arrieta yielded six hits and two walks while striking out six, throwing 63 of his 100 pitches for strikes. The victory was his 11th of the season between Norfolk and Bowie and matched him with Brian Matusz for the most wins among Orioles minor leaguers this year.

Gathright finished with three hits to power Norfolk's 10-hit attack, while Snyder and Melvin Dorta each added two hits apiece. Dorta has now hit safely in each of his last five games, upping his average from .248 to .269.

With the win, Norfolk pulled to within six games of the Braves in the IL South Division and three games of the Durham Bulls in the IL Wild Card chase.

The Tides will look to gain more ground in their playoff hunt on Thursday night at Harbor Park, as Andy Mitchell (9-4, 5.07) will take the hill against right-hander Todd Redmond (8-6, 4.07). First pitch is slated for 7:15.
