
Big Fifth Inning Fuels Vermont's Comeback against Newport, 10-4

Montpelier, VT - Vermont would explode for seven runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning, four coming from Liam McGill (Wakefield, RI/ Columbia), who hit his fifth home run of the year, a grand slam, giving Vermont the 7-2 lead. They would tack three more runs, and would take the game from Newport 10-4.
Two batters in and Newport would take a 1-0 lead quickly. Tim Tawa (West Linn, OR/ Stanford) would double down the left field line, and would score on a Jack Gethings' (Wallingford, CT/ Fairfield) single, giving the Gulls the lead. A solo shot in the fourth from Dalton Reed (Roff, OK/ Kentucky) would extend their lead to two.
Vermont would send a statement in the bottom of the fifth, scoring seven runs. Following a single and a strikeout, four straight walks and two wild pitches would tie the game at two. Ronald Medina (Bronx, NY/ Keystone) would single, loading the bases. McGill would then step to the plate and hit a rocket to left field off the scoreboard for his fifth homerun of the season, giving Vermont the 7-2 lead.
Vermont would add one in the sixth when Nate Grys (Sterling Heights, MI/ Western Michigan) would double home Bryce Kelley (Rockford, MI/ Michigan State), extending the lead to six. Vermont would tack on two more in the seventh on doubles from Jar Parker (Dallas, TX/ Arkansas Pine Bluff) and Kelley.
John Cain (Middletown, NY/ Manhattan) picked up the win for Vermont, going six innings, giving up two runs on six hits while walking three and striking out eight. The loss for Newport went to Holden Powell (Visalia, CA/ UCLA), throwing four and a third innings, giving up five runs on two hits and five walks while striking out six.
Vermont (16-21) continues to keep playoff hopes alive as they now sit five games back of third place Keene (21-16). They'll enjoy an off day Monday before starting their southern trip Tuesday, when they take on Ocean State (18-16). That game is scheduled for 6:30, and can be heard on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI, or online via the NECBL Broadcast Network.
