 Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Sioux Falls, SD-On a night where the Stampede celebrated their Clark Cup championship and raised another banner, the 2015-16 squad played like champions as the Stampede downed the Sioux City Musketeers 5-3 before a large crowd of 8,864 at the PREMIER Center Saturday night. Captain Parker Tuomie tallied two goals, including the game winner, while Collin Peters added a goal and two assists as head coach Scott Owens earned his first win as head coach of the Stampede. Ales Stezka earned his first career USHL victory in goal with 19 saves as the Herd improved to 1-0-0 on the young season.
After a special ceremony to raise the championship banner, the Stampede shook off any nerves they might have had by scoring 6:44 into the game when Jack Becker tallied his first USHL career goal to give the Herd a 1-0 lead. Lawton Courtnall made the play happen when he raced down the left wing boards and cut towards the Sioux City net, slapping a shot that was stopped by Sioux City netminder Cameron Gornet, but the rebound bounced to Becker who quickly knocked it home. Just 58 seconds later the Herd added to their lead when Parker Tuomie knocked home his first of the year. Ryan Brushett found Tuomie in front of the Sioux City net whose first shot hit the post, but he quickly grabbed the rebound and put the puck past Gornet to give Sioux falls a 2-0 lead.
The Musketeers would respond with a power play goal at 13:21 when Eeli Tolvanen wristed a shot into the upper right hand corner of the net past Stampede goaltender Ales Stezka to pull the Musketeers within a goal. Sioux Falls would regain the two goal lead however at 19:20 when Collin Peters pounced on a rebound shot Becker and gave Sioux Falls a 3-1 advantage after one period. Sioux Falls outshot Sioux City 8-6 in the period.
Sioux City wasted little time in the second, getting another goal from Tolvanen to bring the Muskteers back within a goal. The rest of the period would be controlled by the Stampede though who outshot the Musketeers 12-5, but the score remained 3-2 at the end of two periods.
Sioux Falls got into penalty trouble midway through the third and Sioux City took advantage when Jake Durflinger one-timed a pass from Christian Melke and past Stezka to make it a 3-3 game. The goal was on the first part of a double minor power play for Sioux City, but the Stampede killed off the next two minutes and then took the lead again for good just moments later. With puck appearing to head for icing, Peters outskated two Sioux City players behind the net and quickly sent a pass into the slot for Tuomie who skated in and one-timed the shot past the stick side of Gornet to give the Herd a 4-3 advantage and send all 8,864 fans to their feet in excitement. The Herd sealed the game with 45 seconds left when Aaron Miller scored an empty netter from center ice to give Sioux Falls a 5-3 victory.
The Herd outshot the Musketeers 27-22 on the night and finished 1-for-5 on the power play while Sioux City was 2-for-6.
