Big 8th Inning for Wenatchee Hands Bells Loss

July 26, 2013 - West Coast League (WCL)
Bellingham Bells News Release

Bellingham and Wenatchee were locked up in a pitchers dual for seven innings until the AppleSox plated nine runs in the eighth inning, which resulted in an 11-3 Bells loss.

Game one of the series featured all of its scoring in the first inning, a 6-2 Bells win, but things changed in game two. Both teams were scoreless after 2.5 innings, when Wenatchee jumped out to a lead in the third. Ryan Barr singled with one out, and became the first man for either side to reach scoring position. Baker appeared to have him picked off of second base, but a close play went in favor of Wenatchee, and it cost Baker. His next pitch was put onto the outfield grass, as Connor Spencer drove in Barr for the first run of the game.

The AppleSox held the lead at 1-0 after four innings, before the Bells scored three unanswered runs. In the top of the fifth inning, Trent Chatterton started the rally with his first of two walks on the night. Johnny Sewald singled, which put two on with two outs for Alex Calbick. The all-star third baseman picked up his team leading 16th RBI on the year as he singled home Chatterton, which tied the game at 1-1.

Bellingham took the lead for the first time in the game with two runs in the sixth. After Rueben Ybarra and Ryan Yamane reached to begin the inning, Wenatchee head coach Ed Knaggs went to the bullpen, relieving starter Blake Phelps. Reliever Houston Hibberd, who eventually picked up the win in relief, allowed an RBI single to Jake Bailey, which gave the Bells a 2-1 lead. With men on the corners and one out, Trent Chatterton executed a safety squeeze, which scored Yamane, and gave the Bells a two run cushion.

Still leading 3-1, the Bells gave a run back in the bottom of the seventh. AppleSox catcher Eric Hutting doubled over the head of Bells right fielder Jack Meggs, and he scored on an RBI base hit by Brett Stephens. The Bells escaped any further damage in the seventh, but things spiraled out of control in the eighth.

The bottom of the eighth inning was one to forget, as Wenatchee sent 13 men to the plate, picked up eight hits, and plated nine runs against two Bells relievers. Jacob Ehret relieved Nick Baker to begin the inning. Connor Spencer led off the inning with a double, and he scored on an RBI single by Andre Real. That would be it for Ehret, as he allowed both batters to reach, and two runs to score, as he picked up the loss. Will Dennis relieved Ehret and had similar struggles. The lefty walked the first two hitters he faced, which loaded the bases for Eric Hutting.

Trailing 3-2, Hutting hit a bases clearing double, and Wenatchee led 5-3. An RBI double by Stephens followed that, before the first out of the inning was retired. Barr brought home another run on an RBI single. Spencer doubled for the second time in the inning, which plated one more. Kramer Farrell, who pinch ran earlier in the frame doubled home a run on his own, before Joey Janson singled home the ninth run of the inning. Stockton Taylor finally struck out as Dennis got out of the inning. The lefty allowed seven runs, four of them earned in the frame.

Bellingham went down in order in the ninth, as Wenatchee evened up the series and picked up its first win of the season vs. the Bells. The final game of the season series is set for Friday night at Paul Thomas Sr. Stadium at 7:05. The Bells broadcast can be heard on AM 930 KBAI and online at 930kbai.com with the pregame show at 6:35.
