Daytona Tortugas News Release

Florida Governor Charlie Crist's 2nd Annual Governor's Baseball Dinner at Tropicana Field on Tuesday night featured the 2008 Daytona Cubs among the many teams being honored. Governor Crist presented the team with one of four Governor's Awards for winning the 2008 Florida State League Championship. On hand to accept the award for the organization were General Manager Bill Papierniak, Assistant General Managers Brady Ballard and Tom Denlinger, and FSL President Chuck Murphy.

The 2008 Daytona Cubs won the FSL title for the fourth time in team history. The Governor's Award is the first for the organization. The three other awards were given to the Citrus Park Little League World Series team, the Citrus Park Big League Girls Softball team, and the 2008 Gulf Coast League Phillies. Crist also presented a check to the Boys & Girls Club of America.

The dinner, organized by the Florida Sports Foundation to kick off spring training, focused on the recent impact of professional baseball to Florida's economy. In a statement released by Governor Crist, he says, "These baseball teams are a major part of Florida's economy, and a major part of our $36-billion-year sports industry. Spring training alone generates more than $450-million a year in Florida. During historic economic times like what we now face, it is more important than ever that we support and build on successful industries like baseball."

The event was attended by nearly 800 people, including Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig, Hall of Famers Al Kaline, Wade Boggs, Mike Schmidt, Robin Roberts, Tony Perez and Bill Mazeroski. It also featured interviews with both World Series managers from 2008, Joe Maddon of the Tampa Bay Rays and Charlie Manuel of the Philadelphia Phillies.
